Sur has spent centuries looking out to sea. A few things worth knowing before you walk its corniche, so the city feels a little more like yours when you arrive.
The coast here is shaped like the bow of a ship.
The headland beneath Al Ayjah lighthouse curves like a prow into the sea. The lighthouse, with its domed roof, has guided vessels into the narrow creek of Khor Al Batah since 1996. It stands where an old defensive wall once guarded the entrance, and three of its cannons still remain.
A dhow takes two years to become itself.
In Sur’s shipyards, builders dress the outside of a hull in golden teak that stands up to salt and heat, and use Omani wood within. Electric drills now hum beside methods passed down for generations, and a single ship can take a year and a half, sometimes two, to finish.
More than thirty ships carried one hopeful name.
Omani sailors named their vessels after blessings, stars, birds and animals, and more than thirty were called Fatah Al Khair. A restored ghanjah now rests at the Fatah Al Khair Centre, Sur’s museum of maritime heritage.
Whoever came home from the sea was born again.
Old Sur believed that anyone who set sail was lost, and anyone who returned had been reborn. At their peak, ships from this coast traded as far as India, China, Iraq and East Africa.
Even the roundabouts remember the sea.
Look out for dolphins, anchors, fish and ships’ wheels at the city’s crossroads. In the evening, walk the corniche past white houses, watchtowers and moored dhows, then wander back through the souq to your room.
